How do i apply eyeliner when my eyes are sensitive?

I have a banquet coming up and i want to put on eyeliner...how do i if my eyes are sensitive and eyeliner pencils are to hard and press into my eyes which bothers...my skin is soft and squishy so its pretty delicate. plz .&. thxsz.
