When downloading a movie, what's the best format -- avi, mp4, mp2 or mpg?

I want to burn it onto a dvd and don't know which will be clearer, takes the least space, etc. Also is there anything else I should know about burning onto a dvd to conserve space and get the best clarity/quality.
