Asking a question for my mom!!?

My mom started going through menopause for about 2 or 3 years, she hasn't had a period in over a year, she has had hot flashes for about 2 years or 3 years...all of a sudden about a month ago she stopped hot flashing completely and today she started spotting a little....is that normal? to go that long without a period and think it's over and then start again?
